Huma Bhabha: The Company

Sept 19 – Dec 14, 2019
Via Francesco Crispi 16, 00187, Rome

In his renowned short story of 1941, “The Lottery in Babylon,” Jorge Luis Borges writes of a fictional town that is ruled and then overrun by a corrupt lottery system. The artist Huma Bhabha, for her first exhibition in Rome, investigates pervasive yet invisible power in a show named for Borges’ lottery, The Company. Bhabha portrays the Company’s character with drawings that accompany acrid-smelling standing figures. These rather terrifying sculptures are made of dark stacked cork and lightweight styrofoam, materials quickly and brutally cut. — E.C
