Holy Pop!

Hayley Louisa Brown, Children of Graceland.

Strand, London WC2R 1LA, UK

Fan devotion has always been a form of worship—the shrine, the relic, the pilgrimage—and this exhibition takes that idea seriously. The show moves through three rooms—intimate personal obsession, communal grief, domestic ritual—and ends with a piece of pop culture history that makes the whole argument in miniature: Nina Simone’s chewing gum, collected by the musician Warren Ellis after her final U.K. concert, preserved as a relic of artistic devotion and later the inspiration for his memoir. From Princess Diana to Dobby the House Elf, the objects on view are ordinary. The feeling they encode is not. —Elena Clavarino
