Hieronymus Bosch: One Another Renaissance

Hieronymus Bosch, San Giovanni Battista, 1495.

Little is known about the Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch. He didn’t leave behind diaries or letters, and the few facts we’ve retrieved come from the municipal records of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the town where he lived. Yet his darkly fantastical style has cast a long shadow through history. For example, Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s series The Seven Deadly Sins—grotesque engravings of visceral emotion—nods to Bosch. This exhibition of 100 works celebrates Bosch’s art and legacy, and includes works by other masters who took inspiration from him. The curators suggest that Bosch singlehandedly created an alternative Renaissance, one that influenced artists of the classical Renaissance. —Elena Clavarino
