Henrik Simonsen paints each leaf of every plant, no matter how many plants are in the picture. Born in the Danish countryside, he leans into the traditional Scandinavian aesthetic of natural shapes. The colors in his lush fields and bursting forests are augmented, lifting the landscapes into surrealism. Layering the pigment brings further life to his work. Simonsen wants his paintings to move, breathe, and depict the natural world in its brightest form. —Clara Molot
