The famed photographer Helmut Newton, who died in 2004, would have turned 100 last year. Known as “the King of Kink,” he was provocative. As Newton once said, “If a photographer says he is not a voyeur, he is an idiot.” Vogue editor Anna Wintour has said that Newton’s photographs are “synonymous with Vogue at its most glamorous and mythic.” Though fashion photography made him famous, Newton’s portraits and nudes are equally striking and sometimes jarring. In this 100th-birthday display, fashion is the focus, but curator Matthias Harder sprinkles in a bit of everything. Contact sheets, Polaroids, and other props lead one into Newton’s rebellious world. —E.C.
