While earning an M.F.A. degree in painting and printmaking at Yale in the early 2010s, Hayal Pozanti devised her very own alphabet. Over the past decade, these 31 mystical glyphs, inspired by ancient writing systems, have provided a recurring visual vocabulary for the Istanbul-born artist’s signature richly-colored geometric compositions, from Relentless Tenderness, a video animation commissioned by the Public Art Fund in 2017 for the World Trade Center, to Instant Paradise, a permanent installation spanning the 85-by-17-foot ceiling of Fifth Avenue’s Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library. “Now, I have full understanding and control of the language,” says Pozanti, “and I can therefore create worlds from it.” She will debut her first series of finger-painted, plein-air abstractions—which draw on the natural landscape surrounding her home and studio in Manchester, Vermont—at Timothy Taylor’s new Tribeca gallery. —Zoe Ruffner
