Spending her early childhood years at the Villa Medici, in Rome, Harumi Klossowska de Rola roamed its gardens seeking small, colorful stones. She also looked forward to meeting the different pets that visitors brought with them. Today the daughter of the French artist Balthus and the Japanese artist Setsuko Klossowska de Rola is still fascinated by the natural world. A jewelry designer and sculptor, Harumi often creates large creatures. Elephants. Lions. Bulls. Her first solo exhibition in the United States is titled “Hayawan,” after the Arabic word for “animal kingdom.” Showing 15 bronze sculptures of assorted species, the artist powerfully conjures the spirit that ties them to both ancient and contemporary cultures. —Jeanne Malle
