Happily Never After: Dan & Nancy

The love story of Nancy and Daniel Brophy was straight out of a romance novel. Which is fitting because Nancy Brophy is a romance novelist. The two met when Nancy Crampton took a class at the Oregon Culinary Institute, where Dan, a chef, worked as a teacher. They married, and after 25 years together seemed as happy as ever. That is, until June 2, 2018, when Dan was found shot dead in his kitchen at the Institute. Three months later, Nancy was arrested for the crime. A new podcast hosted by Heidi Trethewey, a member of Brophy’s romance writers’ group and a former crime reporter, uncovers a tale that trumps even the most dramatic of Brophy’s novels. —Paulina Prosnitz
