The Argentinian artist Guillermo Kuitca has long been obsessed with theater. In the early 80s, as a young man, he met the German choreographer Pina Bausch and followed her to Wuppertal, a trip that would inspire his first paintings. It is often said that Kuitca’s artistic investigations of architectural plans and geographical maps retain a presence—the energy that can remain after a performer leaves the stage. In recent years, Kuitca has progressed to a “cubistoid” style, through which he explores the intricacies of movement within stasis. He speaks of his work in terms of sound and space and echoes and kinetics. Here in Lille, Kuitca’s first show in France in 20 years, works from his four-decade career are on view. —E.C.
