In 1607, Cardinal Scipione Borghese began construction on his Borghese Gallery in Rome—a sumptuous palace surrounded by sprawling gardens. He envisioned it as a place to house his antique sculptures and contemporary paintings, and by the time the building was completed, nine years later, Borghese’s collection had grown to huge proportions. It included masterpieces by everyone from Veronese to Titian, works the collector obtained through legal means or otherwise. For this exhibition, 40 of the gallery’s most important works have traveled to Paris, including paintings by Rubens, Bernini, Caravaggio, Raphael, and many more. —Elena Clavarino
