The Salvadorian artist Guadalupe Maravilla creates murals, paintings, and sculptures of anguish and hope. Fleeing civil war in El Salvador, Maravilla made it to the United States border—unaccompanied—in the 1980s, when he was just eight years old. At age 26, he was diagnosed with colon cancer and recovery took a long time. In his art, Maravilla reflects on the physical and mental struggles that have been part of his life’s journey. Tierra Blanca Joven means “a young white ash/earth,” and refers back to the fifth century, when a volcano of that name erupted and forced a mass displacement of the Maya people. In this exhibition, new sculptures, paintings, and sound works invoke ancient notions of healing. —Elena Clavarino
