Graciela Iturbide: Heliotropo 37

Graciela Iturbide, “Carnaval, Tlaxcala, México,” 1974.

Mar 9 – May 29, 2022
261 Boulevard Raspail, 75014 Paris, France

The Mexico City studio of photographer Graciela Iturbide is located at 37 Calle Heliotropo, in the historic center of Coyoacán. It was designed by Mauricio Rocha, her son, and has walls of vertically arranged red bricks and a sleek beamed ceiling. In the studio, Iturbide’s photographs are as arresting as the space itself. Iturbide turned to photography after the death of her 6-year-old daughter. She traveled across Mexico, studying the country’s Indigenous cultures and the settlements near the U.S. border, shooting scenes of daily life. This exhibition, hosted in an immersive space also designed by Rocha, presents 200 photographs by Iturbide, works that date from the 1970s up to the present day. This is her first large survey in France. —Elena Clavarino
