The painter Sarah Haffner, who died in 2018, was renowned in German modern art circles. She was born to German parents in Cambridge, England, in 1940, because that’s where they went to escape the Nazis. There the family name, Pretzel, was changed to Haffner—taken from Mozart’s 35th Symphony. Haffner’s early work realistically portrays everyday objects, while later paintings become increasingly abstract. All are a mixture of oil paint and egg tempera, the color palette often leaning on shades of blue, because to Haffner, blue was the color of the soul. A rare retrospective of this artist’s work. —E.C.
