For 50 years, Gilbert & George have intended to both “de-shock” and normalize. As the pair once put it, “We want our art to bring out the bigot from inside the liberal and conversely to bring out the liberal from inside the bigot.” In a retrospective that traces their entire exuberant career, the singular men and women of their vibrant wall-sized works are on display—punks, hipsters, policemen, and icons. Curated by the renowned Hans Ulrich Obrist. —E.C.
