Gilbert & George met in 1967, at London’s Saint Martin’s School of Art. They discovered they had similar views, especially when it came to the credo “Art for All,” which they saw as a way to fight social injustice. The two men began to create together, first working on pictures in black and white, then incorporating grids, then popping in color and stylized graphics. Though their stint at Saint Martin’s was 56 years ago this year, the pair aren’t showing any signs of slowing down. In April, they are opening up a permanent home for their art, just off Brick Lane. This exhibition, which starts at White Cube in London and then moves to Lehmann Maupin in New York, offers their most personal pictures to date. The images are theatrical, but also touched with mortality. —Elena Clavarino
