In 1949, Geta Brătescu was kicked out of her MFA program at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest. Her parents owned property, so Romania’s rising Communist party claimed she was “of bad origins” and banned her from attending the school. Working alone, Brătescu continued honing her skills in an at-home studio. The political and cultural climate of Romania remained hostile to experimental art until the 1980s, which pushed her to be provocative in her work. Focusing on pieces made from 1970 until her death in 2018, this exhibition features Brătescu’s drawings, photos, and experimental films. —Jensen Davis
