Between 1885 and 1894, the landscape painter George Inness lived in Montclair, New Jersey, where he painted sunset, moonrise, and rolling pastures in breathtaking color. Sunset was his favorite subject. For Inness it was a sacred moment—the sun descending from the heavens and hovering just above the horizon line. This exhibition sees Inness’s paintings hung salon-style, in rows up to the ceiling. Many of these works haven’t been on view in years. —Elena Clavarino
