Georg Baselitz: Time

Sept 15, 2019 – Jan 25, 2020
7 rue Debelleyme, 75003 Paris, France

Art is “visceral … eruptive, vulgar,” said the formidable artist Georg Baselitz in 2007. In homage to Elke, his wife of almost 60 years, Baselitz is now looking at the human body, beauty, and the vulnerability of both. In “Time,” 30 large-scale paintings combine elements of the gilded and the grotesque. Using gold paint for the first time, Baselitz’s gaunt figures radiate warmth, and from afar, appear to be floating on glowing canvases. —E.C.
