It’s a challenge to describe Geoffrey Holder in one paragraph. An actor, dancer, choreographer, musician, and visual artist, Holder excelled in every one of these disciplines. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1956 and won Tony Awards in 1975. He was a principal dancer at the Metropolitan Opera Ballet from 1956 to 58, and acted in Hollywood productions such as Live and Let Die (1973) and Annie (1982). You get the picture. This exhibition focuses on Holder’s paintings. Born in 1930, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Holder was creative from a young age, following the lead of his older brother, Boscoe, whose art is also in the show. Often focused on representing the fullness of Black life, Holder depicted intimate spaces as well as public life. “I create for that innocent little boy,” he told Dance magazine in 2010, “He wants to see magic, so I want to give him magic.” —Jeanne Malle
