“I am not a solid to be put in one box, I am like a liquid that spreads into a lot of boxes, keeping a connection with them all,” the French artist and designer Garance Vallée told Elle Decoration last year. “I try to create bridges between all of my worlds.” Vallée’s work is a kind of world building. She draws up two-dimensional plans—artworks in their own right—for imagined spaces in serenely muted pastels, minimalist yet surreal. These are then built into reality. In 2018, the luxury PR firm Martina Gamboni commissioned one of her sets, thus offering the artist, who has a degree in architecture and scenography, a chance to realize the interiors of her mind. Since then, Vallée has also designed for the fashion brands Comptoir des Cotonniers and Vivetta. For her first exhibition in the United States, Vallée has dreamed up spaces inspired by maternity and domesticity, presenting rooms that are at once warm and slightly jarring, a commentary on the pandemic’s strange effect on our relationship to both interiors and the people we share them with. —C.J.F.
