Ghada Amer’s exhibition “My Body My Choice” is timely given the sudden vulnerability of Roe V. Wade. Amer’s work is a forceful plea for larger conversations about bodily autonomy, a point she makes with letter-shaped planters, filled with flowers, that spell out the show’s title. Sexuality and feminism are themes within Amer’s paintings, sculpture, and embroidery. An American living in Cairo, she says, “[I]n countries where one assumes women’s rights to be limited or absent, such as in Egypt, Iran, Afghanistan, or Mexico, women of the younger generation know they have a lot to gain from fighting for those very same rights that are eroding in the West. So they are not letting down their guard and they are continuing to fight fiercely.” —Clara Molot
