The Italian artist Gabriella Giandelli has never been too focused on reality. She creates ethereal illustrations using colored pencils and pastels, imagery that lives somewhere between dream and waking. Her career began in Milan in the 1980s, when she started doing comic strips and illustrations for prominent Italian newspapers. She then moved to books. In the graphic novels Silent Blanket (2000) and Interiorae (2015), she places her characters in vast urban settings, to better examine the effects of isolation. This is Giandelli’s first show in Basel. —Elena Clavarino
