With “Appearances Can Be Deceiving”—a touring exhibition of Frida Kahlo’s clothing, jewelry, objects, even her orthopedic braces, opening next at San Francisco’s De Young Museum on March 21—and Kahlo’s presence in other exhibitions always starred, it’s clear that the artist has a faithful following. Now Kahlo is the subject of a full-length ballet, Frida. The fact that she was disabled first by polio and then, at 18, by a horrible bus accident, is not a problem for classical dance, which expresses poetic, not literal, worlds. “It’s not a biopic,” the choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa told the New York Times, “There will be some moments where we see her struggle with moving, but it’s not going to be central. I’m trying to find, through dance, the symbolism of her paintings.” —L.J.
