During the height of #MeToo, the playwright Kimberly Belflower was struck by Woody Allen’s characterization of the movement as a “witch hunt.” In response, she revisited Arthur Miller’s The Crucible—and John Proctor Is the Villain was born. “The world’s on fire, and a witch hunt has begun in Helen County, Georgia,” reads the play’s description. Set in a conservative Baptist town, it follows a group of teenage girls who come to see John Proctor not as a hero wrongfully accused of witchcraft, but as something else entirely. “I’ll often read scripts for high-schoolers or young women that are trying to connect with my generation,” said the actress Sadie Sink, who starred in the play’s Broadway run, “but it’s rare to find the right fit for a writer who can capture that without dumbing us down.” Danya Taymor directs at the same venue where The Crucible had its London premiere. —Jeanne Malle
