At the end of her life, an elderly widow begins to lose her memories. In an effort to help, her family gives her a “Prime”—a holographic avatar of her late husband, programmed to recount the stories she is no longer able to hold onto. The device is a comfort at first, but as other Primes enter the picture, the line between lived memory and curated narrative grows disquietingly thin. Such is the premise of Jordan Harrison’s Marjorie Prime, a 2015 Pulitzer Prize finalist, now reimagined by the playwright in a new production that stars Cynthia Nixon and June Squibb.
