Freaky

In a play on Friday the 13th and Freaky Friday, this comedy-horror film sees Vince Vaughn as a local serial killer who swaps bodies with a teenager, played by Kathryn Newton. A large part of the fun comes courtesy of Vaughn, who made his name in the raunchy buddy comedies of the early-aughts. His comedic style—the subtle facial expressions and a physicality that made him a favorite in films like Wedding Crashers—is a surprisingly good fit for the role in Freaky. He gives a performance that is nuanced, endearing, and very funny. Also compelling is Newton as a deranged psycho killer, romping through the halls of her high school, which is packed with potential victims. As in his cult classic Happy Death Day, director Christopher Landon uses the slasher mode to give us a gory film that isn’t all blood and guts. There are some deeper insights here, plus plenty of smart laughs. —C.J.F.
