Frank Walter was born in 1926 on the island of Antigua. There he became the first person of color to run one of the island’s sugar plantations. Walter then spent nearly a decade traveling through Europe and the U.K. During his years abroad, due to racism, he was forced to work low-level jobs and became impoverished. But he studied in libraries and also explored his family history; Walter was aware that he descended from white gentry and their enslaved women. Upon his return to Antigua, Walter became a recluse and produced thousands of paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, and toys, as well as writings on art, music, history, and philosophy. This show at the Drawing Center is the artist’s first solo retrospective in the United States. —Zack Hauptman
