In the early 1980s, after attending Yale and studying painting in Paris, Frank Moore moved to Manhattan. Inspired by Surrealism, his canvases depicted dreamlike people and places, and were filled with symbols. When he found out he was HIV positive, in 1985, the diagnosis figured prominently in his art. Moore also became a founding member of Act Up’s visual-arts branch. Curated by the critic Hilton Als, David Zwirner’s new exhibition puts nine of Moore’s rarely seen works on view. The five paintings and four works on paper come from private collections. —Jensen Davis
