Marianne Berenhaut was born in 1943 in war-torn Brussels, and makes sculptures out of stone, metal, and wood. Chantal Akerman was born in 1950, also in Brussels, to Polish Holocaust survivors; she was a filmmaker and installation artist. Akerman’s mother, Sylviane, had spent several years at Auschwitz, and many of Chantal’s films focus on their powerful mother-daughter relationship. Almost 30 years later, in 1978, the prolific photographer Julia Pirotte was born; and in 1981, Sarah Kaliski, a painter known for bright colors and expressive brushstrokes, was delivered in Flemish-speaking Antwerp. Though their practices differ widely, these four Jewish women were all touched by the Nazi persecution. This exhibition brings their work together. —Elena Clavarino
