Originally scheduled for 2020, the London Design Biennale is now just three months away from being a Trienniale. Hosted as usual at Somerset House, the theme this year is Resonance. Highlights include the Ghana, Germany, and India pavilions, plus a very special addition to the festivities. When Somerset House was completed in the 1770s, Sir William Chambers wrote a clause forbidding vegetation in the courtyard of the government complex. To send a powerful message about environmentalism and change, Es Devlin, artistic director of the Biennale, has had the 39,000-foot space filled with over 400 trees. “It was my punk, rock and roll, rebellious instinct to say ‘fill it with a forest,’” she confesses. One thing’s for sure—the sprawling greenery will make for a very pleasant walk on long, hot days in June. —E.C.
