The artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres used everyday materials—paper, puzzles, candy, beads, strings of light—to create minimalist and conceptual works. Born in Cuba, raised in Puerto Rico, Gonzalez-Torres moved to New York City on a study fellowship, in 1979—a time when the personal and the political were increasingly one and the same. An openly gay man, he often used interactive installations to address the subjects of gender, sexuality, and, most urgently, the epidemic that was ravaging the city. In 1996, when he was 38, AIDS claimed his life. This exhibition situates Gonzalez-Torres’s work within postcolonial discourse, and explores the connections between Spanish, Latin American, and Caribbean culture. In conjunction, the billboard series “Untitled (It’s Just a Matter of Time)” is on display across venues in the city. —E.C.
