Even if you don’t know the name “Hilary Knight,” you know his work. He provided the best pictures for the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books. And he created the immortal Eloise, that precocious wild child who keeps things lively at the Plaza Hotel. Knight has been a New York City national treasure for many decades, designing theater posters, illustrating over 50 books, creating art for Graydon Carter’s Vanity Fair, and providing imagery for album covers, menus, murals, and more. Inspired in his formative years by Alexander Korda’s The Thief of Bagdad, MGM’s The Ziegfeld Follies, and the art of his mother, Katharine Sturges, Knight has a style all his own—madly inventive, kinetic, and delightful. This exhibition pays homage to the beloved artist, who is still wielding his pens and pencils with panache. —Laura Jacobs
