If you’ve kept up with this year’s Oscar race, you’re already aware that Emilia Pérez, from the French director Jacques Audiard, is a frontrunner. The story of a Mexican cartel leader (Karla Sofía Gascón) who hopes to transition into a woman, the film took home a handful of awards at the Golden Globes, which was surprising to some: this was a Spanish-language-Netflix-musical, after all, a hyphenation that doesn’t have the same awards appeal that an epic period drama like The Brutalist might. Emilia Pérez is just the latest in a string of triumphs from Audiard, whose recent works include A Prophet (2009), Dheepan (2015), and The Sisters (2018). The Metrograph is screening a selection of films picked by Audiard, among them Blue Velvet, by the late director David Lynch. —Jack Sullivan
