One of El Greco’s most famous works is Adoration of the Shepherds (c. 1605–10), a nativity scene in which shepherds bear witness to the birth of Jesus. Interestingly, this late work in dark hues veers towards abstraction. The figures are clothed in purples, blues, and acid green, and there’s a floating feeling to the painting, as if all are caught in a moment of transcendence. The German-Indian artist Tino Sehgal has created a new performance piece that will be enacted alongside El Greco’s masterpiece. There will be live encounters between visitors and those enacting the performance. —Elena Clavarino
