Eclipse of the Sun: Art of the Weimar Republic

May 23 – Sept 2, 2019
1048 5th Ave, New York, NY 10028, United States

“My drawings expressed my despair, hate, and disillusionment,” wrote Weimar artist George Grosz of his output in the 1920s. His monumental Eclipse of the Sun, a 1926 oil on canvas, continues at the Neue Galerie, on loan from the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, New York. The curators have placed it among works by Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, Otto Griebel, Christian Schad, Rudolf Schlichter, and Georg Scholz—artists of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), their imagery seething, scathing, unblinking. —J.V.
