“In a machine age,” said the couturier Christian Dior, “dressmaking is one of the last refuges of the human, the personal, the inimitable.” Everyone understands that clothes tell stories about identity—about time, place, and social status—and influence one’s acceptance or rejection by other people. Over centuries and across continents dress has been wondrous in its variety, and symbolic of shifts in our thinking. Twinhood mythology in Nigeria, Zipotec women in Mexico, drag queens in New York—this exhibition explores diverse subcultures through what they wear. —Elena Clavarino
