“The Italian Renaissance,” explains the curator Martin Clayton, “would have been impossible without drawing—it was central to every stage of the creative process.” The drawings in this exhibition—many of which are bold and colorful—are held as a part of the Royal Collections, but due to protocols of conservation they must stay mostly hidden in darkened vaults. Until March, however, 160 works from 1450 to 1600, by artists including Leonardo, Raphael, and Titian, will be on view in the King’s Gallery. It’s the widest range of drawings from that period ever to be shown in the U.K. —Elena Clavarino
