It’s safe to assume that Baz Luhrmann is an Elvis Presley fan. The director, known for Romeo+Juliet and The Great Gatsby, spent eight years putting together his 2022 biopic on the American singer, played by Austin Butler, and another four digging through footage for this new project. Luhrmann traveled to Graceland, Presley’s former Memphis home, staying for 18 months doing research before returning to his own home and restoring more than 50 hours of footage, most of it never seen before. The result is a feature-length film that follows Presley’s famous Vegas residency in the 1970s, sprinkled with clips of the singer on tour and at Graceland, as well as voice recordings of him telling his life story. —Jeanne Malle
