Downtown Voice and NOVUS present The Image

89 Broadway, New York, NY 10006, United States

Until 9/11, the Gothic Revival Episcopal house of worship on Lower Broadway known as Trinity Church stood literally in the shadow of the Twin Towers. “We work for justice,” the parish declares, “serve our neighbors, and bring people together to experience God’s love, in community.” With a $6 billion endowment (you read that right), the institution has the means to do so. The intensive concert schedule reflects the solemn ethos. Both works to be heard on this occasion are advertised as exploring “the tension between chaos and hope.” Jessie Montgomery’s Divided (2020), for cello and orchestra, seeks to capture the emotional turmoil of a world grappling with racial injustice, poverty, and climate change. Stephen Main’s 40-minute cantata The Image is said to ponder humanity’s “struggle for liberty and justice across history,” warning of “the fragility of these ideals in the face of rising authoritarianism.” Billed as a world premiere, The Image may be previewed on a live recording from 2023, posted on the composer’s Web site. —Matthew Gurewitsch
