“Rise was created in 1993,” the choreographer Doug Varone has said, “and I think it was an immensely pivotal point for me as a creator. With Rise I felt as if the entire universe split open, and I was able to create a work that felt as if it spilled out across the stage in unpredictable ways.” For the 35th anniversary of Doug Varone and Dancers, the company comes to the Joyce with Rise—a roller coaster, the dancers call it—and the New York premiere of Somewhere, a plotless approach to music from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story.
