John Patrick Shanley wrote his play Doubt: A Parable after 9/11, as U.S. neoconservatives pushed for war in Iraq, insisting that the country had weapons of mass destruction, though it didn’t. “I realized, when I was watching all of these talk shows, with people arguing really confidently about why we had to invade, I’m like, oh, this is just an act of faith.” Premiering on Broadway in 2004—and winning the Tony for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama—Shanley’s problem play is set in a 1960s Bronx church school where Sister Aloysius becomes certain that Father Flynn is molesting a 12-year-old boy. Father Flynn unequivocally denies such “gossip.” Directed by Scott Ellis, the show returns to Broadway for the first time in two decades, and with star power: Liev Schreiber and Amy Ryan are the adversaries. —Jensen Davis
