Anne Patterson used over 1,100 ribbons of blue, red, and gold—each piece 75 feet long—to create her largest work to date. It’s an installation in the vaulted Nave of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, at 112th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. Suspended 90 feet in the air, the ribbons take the viewer’s eye up to the newly restored interior dome. They also speak to the jewel-toned light that streams in through the cathedral’s stained-glass windows. Patterson has invited members of the Morningside Heights neighborhood to write their hopes, dreams, and prayers onto the ribbons. —Clara Molot
