In Manhattan’s Chinatown there’s a spot that youngish people who like to drink, smoke, and snort call Dimes Square. Located at the intersection of Canal and Division Streets, it takes its name from Dimes, a restaurant that serves macrobiotic rice bowls and breakfast burritos, and its offshoots: Dimes Deli, which offers to-go soba noodles and smoothies, and Dimes Market, which sells items like frozen homemade dumplings and various homemade sauces. Matthew Gasda’s play Dimes Square does not premiere in or near Dimes Square, but in a loft in Greenpoint, where the “comedy of contemporary manners” will run for one week. Set over three cocaine-fueled nights, the play sees “backstabbing New York media types”—Gasda’s description of the Dimes Square denizens—talk shit, chase clout, try to make art, fail to make art, and wonder who among them can even be called an artist. —Jensen Davis
