Die Weiden, by Johannes Maria Staud

Nov 7–12, 2019
Opernring 2, 1010 Wien, Austria

In this new opera, young lovers from opposite sides of a great geopolitical divide go boating into the past on the waters of a mighty river. The allegory suggests radical social critique. The composer, now in mid career, is Johannes Maria Staud, of Austria, a favorite of king-making maestros like Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Franz Welser-Möst. —M.G.
