“The actual basis of color is instability” said the Op Art artist Bridget Riley. (Quickie history lesson: Op Art was a movement that sought viewer disorientation through optical illusions, so the name is short for “optical art.”) A new exhibition focuses on the meeting point of Op Art and the silver screen, where visual instability underscored pivotal moments in dramas and thrillers. Movies to be explored include Claude Chabrol’s 1994 L’Enfer as well as Devil in the Flesh (both the 1986 Italian and the 1998 American versions), from which this exhibition takes its title. —J.V.
