Designing Women III: Mother

May 3–28, 2021
151 Hudson St, New York, NY 10013, United States

“One of the worst career moves a woman can make is to have children,” stated The New York Times in an article that ran on September 6, 2014. When puzzling over the disparity in pay between men and women, the most common explanation is the “motherhood penalty,” a mistaken assumption that women, after having children, are no longer as committed to their work as men. To challenge this notion, the Egg Collective and the photographer Tealia Ellis Ritter have gathered work by 28 international female artists who were or are mothers. Names on the roster include the fearless Black artist Faith Ringgold, the prolific Louise Bourgeois, the inventive Charlotte Perriand, and many more. Paintings, ceramics, drawings, installations, and photographs are on view. —E.C.
