“The theater and films are very far from women’s consciousness about themselves,” said Delphine Seyrig, the renowned mid-century actress. An ethereal beauty with an intellectual edge, Seyrig was born in Lebanon, grew up in Beirut, Greece, and New York, and later worked as an actress, starting her career on the stage, then making a name for herself in French cinema. As if that wasn’t enough, she became an unstoppable advocate for women’s emancipation, and part of a circle that included Simone de Beauvoir, Jane Fonda, and Kate Millett.
