In Jamaican Creole, the phrase dead lef translates as “what the dead have left behind.” At BAM’s Rose Cinemas a screening of short films by Jamaican directors, curated by Joseph Douglas Elmhirst (Burnt Milk), explores the concept of cultural inheritance and how legacies of the past bleed into contemporary Jamaica. The screening—which features films by seven Jamaican directors—will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and the Booker Prize–winning novelist Marlon James. —Paulina Prosnitz
