The artist David Salle grew up in Wichita, Kansas, among grain silos, drive-ins, and Mexican restaurants. He moved to Manhattan in 1976 and, during the Reagan years, broke into the art world with paintings inspired by graffiti, cartoons, and pop culture. Salle overlapped figures, used alternating viewpoints, and combined canvases. His moody diptychs and triptychs have been called musical in their repetition and variation. At Galerie Andrea Caratsch, a selection of Salle’s early, often large-scale paintings are on view. —Jensen Davis
