“I paint what I like,” David Hockney has said, “when I like, and where I like.” His multifaceted oeuvre supports that statement. Ever since Hockney’s early days in Yorkshire, he has experimented with painting, drawing, printmaking, watercolor, and photography. Born in 1937, a time when homosexuality was still a penal offense, Hockney addresses themes of queerness and eros in his work but with subtlety. Now 84 and living between Normandy and the U.K., Hockney is painting landscapes, sometimes panoramically, that capture the passage of time in swift color. This retrospective presents 110 works on loan from the Tate Collection, and moves through decades of Hockney. —Elena Clavarino
